5.8" Pennsylvanian Fossil Horsetail (Sphenophyllum?) Plate - Kentucky

This is a beautiful fossil flora plate that contains a horsetail fossil. This plate was collected from the Breathitt Formation of Leslie County, Kentucky. It comes from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio.

The preservation detail isn't the greatest, making this specimen difficult to identify. It resembles the species Sphenophyllum myriophyllum, as well as a Asterophyllites sp.. Based on previous specimens where these fossils were associated with Sphenophyllum whorls, I'm leaning towards this specimen being of the species Sphenophyllum myriophyllum.
