These are fulgurite specimens collected from the Sahara Desert in Morocco. The photos are representative of the specimen(s) you will receive. They range in size from 1 1/2" to 2" in length, though some may be larger. Each specimen is naturally formed into unique structures that are truly one of a kind.
These unusual natural formations get their name from ‘fulgur’, the Latin word for lightning. They form when lightning strikes damp sand, which conducts electricity. The electricity superheats the sand and rapidly cools, forming a delicate glassy tube structure composed of nearly pure silicon dioxide. The whole process can take less than a second.
