2.2" Cut/Polished Hoploscaphites Ammonite - South Dakota

This is a 2.2" wide Hoploscaphities nodosus, from the Pierre Shale of South Dakoka. This uncommon ammonite species is distinctive nodes or bumps on the shell which would have helped to add strength to it. The ammonite has been cut in half and polished, allowing for presentation of its inner chambers. Each half is accompanied by an acrylic display stand.

There is still a small portion of fossil filled rock that hasn't been prepped free from the ammonite, making the entire specimen 2.8" long.

These 70 million year old ammonites lived when South Dakota was a shallow inland sea. It was found preserved in a concretion that was split open. It then had to be hand prepared to remove the hard rock surrounding it from the shell, a very time consuming task.
