3" Rare Kayserops megaspina Trilobite - Bou Lachrhal, Morocco

This is a rare Kayserops megaspina from Bou Lachrhal, Morocco. In the past this trilobite has often been referred to as “Comura cometa", but it actually bears few similarities with the genus Comura. At 3" long this is a large specimen of the species and the preparation is excellent. All of the small free-standing spines are preserved, and it has great eye facets in the right eye. The only restoration is some minor shell restoration along the repaired crack running diagonally through the body.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
