Bargain, 3" Morocconites Trilobite - Ofaten, Morocco

This is a 3" specimen of Morocconites malladoides quarried near Ofaten, Morocco. The genus has a distinctive pointed rostrum coming off the front of it's head which has been prepared free-standing in this specimen. This specimen has between 5% shell restoration. Mostly on the right hand side of the tail as well as some smaller patches along the axis and on the head. The multi-toned coloration is natural and is often seen at the locality.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
