2.55" Multi-Color Morocconites Trilobite - Ofaten, Morocco

Here is a naturally multi-toned, 2.55" long Morocconites malladoides trilobite from Ofaten, Morocco. It has nice shell preservation and preparation. A lot of trilobites from this area have similar multi-color shell patterns which is due to geological changes to the rock after fossilization. There are visible eye facets in both eyes. The front half of the snout has been restored and there are some small areas of shell restoration along the repaired crack running through the trilobite.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
