Pennsylvanian Fossil Horsetail (Calamites) - Kentucky

This is a 1.1" fossil horsetail (Calamites), from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. Calamites is an extinct genus of tree like horsetails from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Eastern Kentucky and Ohio. Often the leaves are referred to as Annularia. This is a form taxon. That is to say that the leaves of Calamites plant have been given taxonomic names that only refer to the leaves. There is a second Calamites and bare stalk included in this specimen
